SUMMARY:Living More With Less – A Nonviolent Alternative To Empire
DESCRIPTION:“Living More With Less – A Nonviolent Alternative To Empire” \nRegister at Eventbrite here: https://raisingpeacefestival2024.eventbrite.com.au \nIt is easy to be overwhelmed by the daily news cycle of war\, political corruption\, ecological destruction and to feel as individuals there is nothing we can do about it. Big corporations and the empires they support have won! But as Wendell Berry recommends in his wonderful poem Manifesto: The Mad Farmer Liberation Front\, “…every day do something that won’t compute.” \nThere are alternative nonviolent ways to live. Doris Janzen Longacre\, a church relief worker in the early 1970’s\, compiled a book named the More With Less Cookbook that has now sold nearly two million copies worldwide.  In Longacre’s introduction\, she begins by establishing that our actions on behalf of the world’s needs are as important as feeding our own families. To have a positive effect on the world\, she outlines the following five principles: (1) do justice\, (2) learn from the global community\, (3) cherish the natural order\, (4) nurture people\, and (5) nonconform freely. \nThis workshop is presented by the AAANZ (Anabaptist Association of Australia and New Zealand) and Wellspring Community. Presenters: Mark and Mary Hurst. We will explore these principles in our workshop and hear from others about their experiences.

SUMMARY:#NoWar2024 Conference: Resisting the USA’s Military Empire
DESCRIPTION:The 3-day #NoWar2024 Conference was an opportunity to learn about the impact of the USA’s military base empire and how to resist it. The conference travelled virtually across the globe\, visiting sites near U.S. military bases\, from Australia\, to Germany\, to Colombia\, with the concluding event in Washington\, DC\, the heart of the U.S. military base empire. \nYou can view all of the sessions from #NoWar2024 at World Beyond War’s website (https://worldbeyondwar.org/nowar2024/) or via a Youtube playlist. \nEnding all wars means closing all military bases. The United States of America\, unlike any other nation\, maintains a massive network of foreign military bases around the world\, over 800 bases in 80 countries. These bases are costly in a number of ways: financially\, politically\, socially\, and environmentally. U.S. bases in foreign lands often raise geopolitical tensions\, support undemocratic regimes\, and serve as a recruiting tool for militant groups opposed to the U.S. presence and the governments its presence bolsters. In other cases\, foreign bases are being used and have made it easier for the United States to launch and execute disastrous wars\, including those in Afghanistan\, Iraq\, Yemen\, Somalia\, and Libya. Across the political spectrum and even within the U.S. military there is growing recognition that many overseas bases should have been closed decades ago\, but bureaucratic inertia and misguided political interests have kept them open. \nAustralia has a long history of welcoming US bases and service personnel. Dozens of locations around the country are wholly or partly controlled by the USA or are accessed by the American military. Joint military exercises take place on Australian land and sea. But these are only symptoms of a deeper problem for Australia. \nModern Australia was formed through colonialism. It has a long history of militarism and strategic subservience\, first to the United Kingdom and now to the United States. There has always been bipartisan support for this\, best demonstrated today in the AUKUS agreement. A militaristic mindset is deeply embedded in Australia’s history\, politics and culture. \nAddressing the problem of US bases in Australia requires deep systemic changes. These include reckoning with our own history\, recalibrating our understanding of our place in the world and stopping the spread of militarisation in Australian society. It intersects with the fight against climate change. Meanwhile\, RP believes that the quiet majority of Australians want to live in peace. \nThe Australian leg of the #NoWar2024 Conference explored these issues\, bringing together eminent strategic thinkers\, First Nations campaigners against nuclear weapons\, civil society leaders and\, critically\, younger Australians. It is their future that is at risk. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Pastor Ray MinnieconKabi Kabi and Gureng Gureng Elder \n \n \n \n \n Prof the Hon Bob CarrFormer Foreign Minister \n \n \n \n \n Karina LesterYankunytjatjara Anangu anti-nuclear activist \n \n \n \n \n Alison BroinowskiDirector\, World Beyond War \n \n \n \n \n Peter CronauInvestigative journalist \n \n \n \n \n Lilli BartoCampaigner\, Wage Peace \n \n \n \n \n Dr Sue WarehamPresident\, MAPW \n \n \n \n \n Dr Keith SuterModerator \n \n \n \n \n Dr Albert PalazzoMilitary historian & analyst \n \n \n \n \n Melanie MorrisonModerator

SUMMARY:The Fire Still Burns: Hiroshima\, disarmament\, resistance
DESCRIPTION:A Hiroshima Day event with Peter Garrett and ICAN Australia. \nEighty years after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, the fire still burns — in memory\, in resistance\, and in the global movement to abolish nuclear weapons. \nAs nuclear tensions escalate and Australia becomes more entangled in nuclear alliances\, this one-hour online event brings together survivors\, artists\, campaigners and parliamentarians to reflect on Hiroshima’s legacy — and the urgent task of disarmament. \nSpeakers include:\n\n\nPeter Garrett – Musician\, environmentalist and former federal cabinet minister. Best known as the frontman of Midnight Oil\, Garrett has spent decades campaigning on issues of peace\, justice and nuclear disarmament. He served as Minister for the Environment and Minister for Education\, and is a longstanding critic of nuclear weapons and the nuclear industry. \n\n\nIsao Morimoto – Second-generation Hibakusha and son of the late author/illustrator Junko Morimoto. Isao will share personal reflections on his mother’s life and survival. \n\n\nGem Romuld – Director\, ICAN Australia\, leading national efforts to promote the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and challenge Australia’s support for nuclear militarism. \n\n\nScott Ludlam – Writer\, former Greens Senator and lifelong national and international campaigner for peace and climate justice (MC) \n\n\nThe event will also feature: \n\n\nVideo contributions from Australian parliamentarians and civil society leaders \n\n\nMusic and storytelling to honour the memory of Hiroshima and those working for peace today \n\n\nOn 6 and 9 August 1945\, the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were obliterated by a single bombs. Tens of thousands were killed instantly. Survivors and their descendants still bear the physical and emotional scars. \nEighty years on\, nuclear-armed states continue to threaten the world — and Australia risks becoming more deeply complicit. But there is another path\, one that the global majority is already forging. The vehicle to take us down that path is the nuclear weapon ban treaty. \nThis Hiroshima Day\, join us to honour the past and resist the future being shaped in our name. \nFree. Registration is essential. \nhttps://actionnetwork.org/events/the-fire-still-burns-hiroshima-resistance-and-disarmament?source=direct_link&

We pay our respects to all First Nations people and acknowledge their ongoing resistance to injustice under colonial rule. \nWe’re bringing together our friends and allies to build relationships across the movements for justice\, and to get serious about sharing the skills that are required to build community power. \nRising Tide is a climate-focused movement targeting the world’s largest coal port in Newcastle\, and is building skills and power both in the local community and around the country to take on the fossil fuel industry. \nBut whether your focus is in the First Nations\, climate\, anti-genocide\, queer\, or union movements – or any other struggle for a better world – our needs for relationships of friendship and solidarity\, and the skills required to run effective campaigns\, are much the same. \nHowever\, we hope that you will meet people who are not like you\, and share different experiences of life. This is to be celebrated\, as relationships – and movements – grow by listening to each others’ stories and respecting the wonderful diversity that brings us together. \nWhat to expect at Action Camp\nGeneral program \nRising Tide facilitators will run a series of workshops and trainings sharing some of our core frameworks and skills\, including campaign strategy\, spokes-council and consensus decision-making\, and storytelling. \nWe’re drawing on experienced movement allies to run participatory workshops on conversations\, deep canvassing\, legal observing\, action coordination\, mass and activist cooking\, and many more skills. \nIn the Addi Road recording studio\, we’ll be hosting “in conversation” events and panels\, both to participate in and to record for distribution around the movement after the event – making sure the wisdom shared can be accessible going forward. \nExpect zine workshops\, banner painting\, singing and dancing – and bring your instrument for evening jams and open mics. \nCome for a semi-facilitated\, relationship-building People’s Supper and open mic on Friday night. Stay tuned for concert announcements for Saturday night\, and action prep on Sunday night! \n— \nWho is running workshops? \nWe’re organising through our relational networks in the grassroots movement and through Addi Road – we look forward to promoting individual workshops as they’re locked in to our dynamic and evolving program. \nWhere will my financial contribution go? \nTickets for Action Camp are free for First Nations\, under 18s\, and those experiencing housing or financial insecurity. We want to make this community space as accessible as possible. Financial contributions will go towards venue and food costs\, cultural labour\, and logistical support – this is an entirely volunteer-run event. \nHow can I help? \nLet us know how you’d like to contribute in the Volunteering section at the end of the form\, or get in touch with sydney@risingtide.org.au if you have a proposal for a skill- or relationship-building session. \nWhat next? \nLook forward to a logistics and program email update closer to the date\, and please click “Going” and share the Facebook event found here.

SUMMARY:Pass the Baton: Commemorating 80 Years Since the End of WWII
DESCRIPTION:(Registrations for this event are full\, but might be worth checking with the organiser https://www.japanclubofsydney.org/english/)\n  \n80 years on: A living witness to history \nThis year marks 80 years since the end of WWII. To honour this milestone\, we are deeply privileged to welcome Keiko Ogura\, a Hiroshima survivor (hibakusha)\, to Sydney. At just 8 years old\, Keiko lived through the atomic bombing—today\, she carries forward the memory\, not as history\, but as a call for peace.\nThis is a rare opportunity to hear firsthand from someone who endured the unimaginable. Her powerful testimony reminds us of the human cost of war and the hope that still survives. A live Q&A will follow her speech. \n  \n💬 Event Highlights\n\nTestimony by Keiko OguraOne of the few survivors who shares her story in English\, Keiko will recount the moment the bomb hit Hiroshima\, its aftermath\, and the enduring consequences.A Q&A session will follow.\nReading Performance: The Face of Jizo『父と暮せば』An excerpt from the iconic Japanese play exploring grief and survivor’s guilt in post-war Hiroshima. While portraying the devastation of the atomic bomb and the survivors’ emotional burden\, the piece also honours the wishes and voices of those who were lost\nLearn about Hiroshima and Nagasaki  (optional)A panel exhibition exploring the reality of the atomic bombings\, including their effects on health\, society\, and the lives of survivors.\n\n\nScreening ofHiroshima Mother’s Prayer (optional)A 30-minute documentary\, featuring footage captured immediately after the atomic blast. The film presents a mother’s perspective on the horrors of war and advocates for the abolition of nuclear weapons and the pursuit of world peace.\nOrigami Activity: Folding Paper Cranes (optional)Join us in folding paper cranes\, a traditional symbol of peace and hope. The cranes will be offered to the “Children’s Peace Monument” at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park\, expressing the wishes of people worldwide for a peaceful future.\n\nWhy this event matters\nIn an era of rising conflict\, this event serves as both history and healing. In Australia\, where few have access to this perspective\, this is a moment for collective remembrance—and a gift to future generations. \nIt’s also a bridge. Between Japanese and Australian communities. Between past and present. Between knowledge and empathy. \nWe’re honoured to host this gathering in The Auditorium of the NSW Teachers Federation\, whose generous support as our venue sponsor helps make this event possible. \n  \n🤝 About the Organiser\nThe Japan Club of Sydney (JCS) is a not-for-profit\, volunteer-led organisation founded in 1983. With over 350 member households\, JCS is dedicated to preserving Japanese culture\, promoting peace\, and contributing to a more connected multicultural society in Australia.
