DESCRIPTION:The SINGING FOR PEACE AROUND THE WORLD concert is being held at the Gaelic Club\, Surry Hills on Sunday afternoon 4th August (3-7pm). \nCome and join in this opportunity to share uplifting\, healing\, challenging and participatory songs and poems about war and peace. \nMaurie Mulheron has been singing peace songs and protest songs since the 60s. He is a very engaging performer who unites audiences in song\, getting them to participate in the style of the immortal Pete Seeger. Maurie plays several instruments and is joined by friends Deanne Dale (vocals & percussion)\, Stafford Sanders (vocals\, guitar\, mandolin)\, Russell Neal (vocals\, bass)\, Christina Mimmocchi (vocals\, sax)\, and Margaret Walters (vocals). \nLarissa Kovalchuk is an enchanting singer\, accompanying herself on the multi-stringed bandura\, the Ukrainian national instrument \nMooncatchers is a Newtown-based women’s choir that sings songs in a variety of styles and to honour the experiences and stories of women including many empowering songs of peace and freedom. Christina Mimmocchi is the musical director. \nPerSisters is a duo of Margaret Walters and Christina Mimmocchi – both carriers of the folk tradition – choose strong songs about women\, social justice and peace. \n2 DIVAS: Darlene Proberts and Mary\, Queen of Sax will sing uplifting songs of hope. Darlene is a Wiradjuri woman from Dubbo. \nMiguel Heatwole and Sophie Moore are from the trio\, Song Brother. They’ll be singing thought-provoking songs with searing harmonies. Miguel is the director of environmental choir\, Ecopella\, recording engineer and composer. Sophie is a member of two of Miguel’s groups\, Song Brother\, Andsome Friends. She also sings with The Fossickers. \nOur MC\, Colin Hesse\, former Australian Greens Councillor on the Inner West Council\, was heavily involved in the local community for nearly 40 years\, campaigning for many progressive reforms. Colin is a volunteer presenter on Radio Skid Row 88.9FM\, is an active supporter of live music\, and a member of the Marrickville Peace Group. His strong interest in music and social justice makes him an ideal MC for this concert. \nThe concert is a fundraiser for the Raising Peace Festival occurring 14-22 September with mostly online workshops and panel discussions on a variety of topics. A highlight will be the conference “No War 2024”: Resisting the USA’s Military Empire held in collaboration with World Beyond War being held on the International UN Day of Peace on 21 September. This hybrid event is part of a global chain of four 4-hour sequential events\, broadcast from different countries that have USA bases\, Sydney being the first in the series. The ABIASCA model was reviewed\, which distinguishes 7 goals: awareness-raising\, building sympathy\, generating intentions\, & realising actions (the four mobilisation goals)\, as well as sustaining motivation over time and in the face of failure\, coalition-building\, and avoiding counter-mobilisation (three goals for ‘persisting to power’).  Small group work and discussion was used to ground participants’ applications in the peace context. \nA two page handout summarising the ABAISCA model can be downloaded here. \nThe workshop was facilitated by Winnifred Louis\, Professor of Psychology at the University of Queensland\, Australia and Principal Researcher in the Social Change Lab.

John has been involved in nuclear disarmament and risk reduction at the UN since 2006.  John is a co-convenor in the Abolition 2000 Nuclear Risk Reduction Working Group and the Global No First Use campaign.\n \nProf. Tilman Ruff – Tilman has been a major mover in ICAN and the campaign for a Nuclear Ban Treaty for decades.  Tilman is expert on nuclear winter.\n \nAaron Tovish – Aaron has been active in many organisations at a high level since the 1980’s. Most recently he has been campaign director with Mayors For Peace. He is currently senior adviser to the No First Use campaign\, and a co-convenor of the Abolition 2000 Nuclear Risk Reduction working group.

Big corporations and the empires they support have won! But as Wendell Berry recommends in his wonderful poem Manifesto: The Mad Farmer Liberation Front\, “…every day do something that won’t compute.” \nThere are alternative nonviolent ways to live. Doris Janzen Longacre\, a church relief worker in the early 1970’s\, compiled a book named the More With Less Cookbook that has now sold nearly two million copies worldwide.  In Longacre’s introduction\, she begins by establishing that our actions on behalf of the world’s needs are as important as feeding our own families. To have a positive effect on the world\, she outlines the following five principles: (1) do justice\, (2) learn from the global community\, (3) cherish the natural order\, (4) nurture people\, and (5) nonconform freely. \nThis workshop is presented by the AAANZ (Anabaptist Association of Australia and New Zealand) and Wellspring Community. Presenters: Mark and Mary Hurst. We will explore these principles in our workshop and hear from others about their experiences.

SUMMARY:#NoWar2024 Conference: Resisting the USA’s Military Empire
DESCRIPTION:The 3-day #NoWar2024 Conference was an opportunity to learn about the impact of the USA’s military base empire and how to resist it. The conference travelled virtually across the globe\, visiting sites near U.S. military bases\, from Australia\, to Germany\, to Colombia\, with the concluding event in Washington\, DC\, the heart of the U.S. military base empire. \nYou can view all of the sessions from #NoWar2024 at World Beyond War’s website (https://worldbeyondwar.org/nowar2024/) or via a Youtube playlist. \nEnding all wars means closing all military bases. The United States of America\, unlike any other nation\, maintains a massive network of foreign military bases around the world\, over 800 bases in 80 countries. These bases are costly in a number of ways: financially\, politically\, socially\, and environmentally. U.S. bases in foreign lands often raise geopolitical tensions\, support undemocratic regimes\, and serve as a recruiting tool for militant groups opposed to the U.S. presence and the governments its presence bolsters. In other cases\, foreign bases are being used and have made it easier for the United States to launch and execute disastrous wars\, including those in Afghanistan\, Iraq\, Yemen\, Somalia\, and Libya. Across the political spectrum and even within the U.S. military there is growing recognition that many overseas bases should have been closed decades ago\, but bureaucratic inertia and misguided political interests have kept them open. \nAustralia has a long history of welcoming US bases and service personnel. Dozens of locations around the country are wholly or partly controlled by the USA or are accessed by the American military. Joint military exercises take place on Australian land and sea. But these are only symptoms of a deeper problem for Australia. \nModern Australia was formed through colonialism. It has a long history of militarism and strategic subservience\, first to the United Kingdom and now to the United States. There has always been bipartisan support for this\, best demonstrated today in the AUKUS agreement. A militaristic mindset is deeply embedded in Australia’s history\, politics and culture. \nAddressing the problem of US bases in Australia requires deep systemic changes. These include reckoning with our own history\, recalibrating our understanding of our place in the world and stopping the spread of militarisation in Australian society. It intersects with the fight against climate change. Meanwhile\, RP believes that the quiet majority of Australians want to live in peace. \nThe Australian leg of the #NoWar2024 Conference explored these issues\, bringing together eminent strategic thinkers\, First Nations campaigners against nuclear weapons\, civil society leaders and\, critically\, younger Australians. DESCRIPTION:A Hiroshima Day event with Peter Garrett and ICAN Australia. \nEighty years after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, the fire still burns — in memory\, in resistance\, and in the global movement to abolish nuclear weapons. \nAs nuclear tensions escalate and Australia becomes more entangled in nuclear alliances\, this one-hour online event brings together survivors\, artists\, campaigners and parliamentarians to reflect on Hiroshima’s legacy — and the urgent task of disarmament. \nSpeakers include:\n\n\nPeter Garrett – Musician\, environmentalist and former federal cabinet minister. Best known as the frontman of Midnight Oil\, Garrett has spent decades campaigning on issues of peace\, justice and nuclear disarmament. He served as Minister for the Environment and Minister for Education\, and is a longstanding critic of nuclear weapons and the nuclear industry. \n\n\nIsao Morimoto – Second-generation Hibakusha and son of the late author/illustrator Junko Morimoto. Isao will share personal reflections on his mother’s life and survival. \n\n\nGem Romuld – Director\, ICAN Australia\, leading national efforts to promote the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and challenge Australia’s support for nuclear militarism. \n\n\nScott Ludlam – Writer\, former Greens Senator and lifelong national and international campaigner for peace and climate justice (MC) \n\n\nThe event will also feature: \n\n\nVideo contributions from Australian parliamentarians and civil society leaders \n\n\nMusic and storytelling to honour the memory of Hiroshima and those working for peace today \n\n\nOn 6 and 9 August 1945\, the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were obliterated by a single bombs. Tens of thousands were killed instantly. Survivors and their descendants still bear the physical and emotional scars. \nEighty years on\, nuclear-armed states continue to threaten the world — and Australia risks becoming more deeply complicit. But there is another path\, one that the global majority is already forging. The vehicle to take us down that path is the nuclear weapon ban treaty. \nThis Hiroshima Day\, join us to honour the past and resist the future being shaped in our name. \nFree.
