SUMMARY:#NoWar2024 Conference: Resisting the USA’s Military Empire
DESCRIPTION:The 3-day #NoWar2024 Conference was an opportunity to learn about the impact of the USA’s military base empire and how to resist it. The conference travelled virtually across the globe\, visiting sites near U.S. military bases\, from Australia\, to Germany\, to Colombia\, with the concluding event in Washington\, DC\, the heart of the U.S. military base empire. \nYou can view all of the sessions from #NoWar2024 at World Beyond War’s website (https://worldbeyondwar.org/nowar2024/) or via a Youtube playlist. \nEnding all wars means closing all military bases. The United States of America\, unlike any other nation\, maintains a massive network of foreign military bases around the world\, over 800 bases in 80 countries. These bases are costly in a number of ways: financially\, politically\, socially\, and environmentally. U.S. bases in foreign lands often raise geopolitical tensions\, support undemocratic regimes\, and serve as a recruiting tool for militant groups opposed to the U.S. presence and the governments its presence bolsters. In other cases\, foreign bases are being used and have made it easier for the United States to launch and execute disastrous wars\, including those in Afghanistan\, Iraq\, Yemen\, Somalia\, and Libya. Across the political spectrum and even within the U.S. military there is growing recognition that many overseas bases should have been closed decades ago\, but bureaucratic inertia and misguided political interests have kept them open. \nAustralia has a long history of welcoming US bases and service personnel. Dozens of locations around the country are wholly or partly controlled by the USA or are accessed by the American military. Joint military exercises take place on Australian land and sea. But these are only symptoms of a deeper problem for Australia. \nModern Australia was formed through colonialism. It has a long history of militarism and strategic subservience\, first to the United Kingdom and now to the United States. There has always been bipartisan support for this\, best demonstrated today in the AUKUS agreement. A militaristic mindset is deeply embedded in Australia’s history\, politics and culture. \nAddressing the problem of US bases in Australia requires deep systemic changes. These include reckoning with our own history\, recalibrating our understanding of our place in the world and stopping the spread of militarisation in Australian society. It intersects with the fight against climate change. Meanwhile\, RP believes that the quiet majority of Australians want to live in peace. \nThe Australian leg of the #NoWar2024 Conference explored these issues\, bringing together eminent strategic thinkers\, First Nations campaigners against nuclear weapons\, civil society leaders and\, critically\, younger Australians. It is their future that is at risk. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Pastor Ray MinnieconKabi Kabi and Gureng Gureng Elder \n \n \n \n \n Prof the Hon Bob CarrFormer Foreign Minister \n \n \n \n \n Karina LesterYankunytjatjara Anangu anti-nuclear activist \n \n \n \n \n Alison BroinowskiDirector\, World Beyond War \n \n \n \n \n Peter CronauInvestigative journalist \n \n \n \n \n Lilli BartoCampaigner\, Wage Peace \n \n \n \n \n Dr Sue WarehamPresident\, MAPW \n \n \n \n \n Dr Keith SuterModerator \n \n \n \n \n Dr Albert PalazzoMilitary historian & analyst \n \n \n \n \n Melanie MorrisonModerator

SUMMARY:Living More With Less – A Nonviolent Alternative To Empire
DESCRIPTION:“Living More With Less – A Nonviolent Alternative To Empire” \nRegister at Eventbrite here: https://raisingpeacefestival2024.eventbrite.com.au \nIt is easy to be overwhelmed by the daily news cycle of war\, political corruption\, ecological destruction and to feel as individuals there is nothing we can do about it. Big corporations and the empires they support have won! But as Wendell Berry recommends in his wonderful poem Manifesto: The Mad Farmer Liberation Front\, “…every day do something that won’t compute.” \nThere are alternative nonviolent ways to live. Doris Janzen Longacre\, a church relief worker in the early 1970’s\, compiled a book named the More With Less Cookbook that has now sold nearly two million copies worldwide.  In Longacre’s introduction\, she begins by establishing that our actions on behalf of the world’s needs are as important as feeding our own families. To have a positive effect on the world\, she outlines the following five principles: (1) do justice\, (2) learn from the global community\, (3) cherish the natural order\, (4) nurture people\, and (5) nonconform freely. \nThis workshop is presented by the AAANZ (Anabaptist Association of Australia and New Zealand) and Wellspring Community. Presenters: Mark and Mary Hurst. We will explore these principles in our workshop and hear from others about their experiences.

SUMMARY:The Psychology of Effective Activism
DESCRIPTION:Register at Eventbrite here: https://raisingpeacefestival2024.eventbrite.com.au \nThis workshop reviewed the psychology of effective activism for diverse audiences and time frames. The ABIASCA model was reviewed\, which distinguishes 7 goals: awareness-raising\, building sympathy\, generating intentions\, & realising actions (the four mobilisation goals)\, as well as sustaining motivation over time and in the face of failure\, coalition-building\, and avoiding counter-mobilisation (three goals for ‘persisting to power’).  Small group work and discussion was used to ground participants’ applications in the peace context. \nA two page handout summarising the ABAISCA model can be downloaded here. \nThe workshop was facilitated by Winnifred Louis\, Professor of Psychology at the University of Queensland\, Australia and Principal Researcher in the Social Change Lab.

SUMMARY:Minors & Missiles
DESCRIPTION:In 2022 Medical Association for Prevention of War (MAPW) released a comprehensive report about the growing intrusion of multinational weapons companies into primary and secondary STEM education. Weapons companies seek to create positive brand association in minors and their families\, to promote and normalise careers in the development of lethal technology\, and generate social license for the trillion-dollar global trade in arms through their association with STEM education programs. \nIntrusion into children’s education is the beginning of a comprehensive pipeline that continues into the tertiary education sector\, where weapons companies are involved in bursaries\, research\, scholarships\, laboratories and more. \nThis session will illustrate the issue of harmful influence in education\, and show how we have successfully pushed back. By changing policies\, advocating to STEM programs\, promoting positive examples\, forging alliances\, and withdrawing social licence\, we can continue to make a difference. \nElise West from MAPW will present.

SUMMARY:Unpacking the Statement from the Heart
DESCRIPTION:‘Voice\, Treaty\, Truth’ is only the start. Wiradjuri priest\, writer and artist Glenn Loughrey has looked deeply at the Uluru Statement from the Heart and finds in it powerful potential for restorative justice in Australia – and more. In this session he will be in conversation with Emma Yates\, a lawyer and mediator with a keen interest in restorative principles and practice. \nGlen Loughrey \nGlenn is a Wiradjuri man. He is a leader at the Crawford School of Public Policy at the Australian National University in Canberra and the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne’s Educator and Advocate for the Voice. He is the chairperson of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Anglican Council\, the vicar of St Oswald’s in Glen Iris and artist in residence at St Paul’s Anglican Cathedral in Melbourne. Glenn is  the author of three books and is the author of Unpacking the Statement from the Heart A Personal Perspective from a Wiradjuri Man\, a paper written under the banner of the Crawford School of Public Policy. The views expressed in this perspective belong to Glenn alone are the fruit of deep reflection. It is vital that we listen and appreciate the different perspectives of First Nations people\, and understand the question confronting us as Australians. \nEmma Yates \nEmma Yates is a non-Indigenous Australian\, a mediator with a keen interest in restorative justice\, a recent Master of Peace and Conflict Studies graduate\, and passionate about relational peacebuilding. Emma first heard from Uncle Glenn Loughrey during the Initiatives of Change ‘Turruk’ program in 2021. She was deeply challenged by his call to non-Indigenous Australians to first acknowledge and reconcile inside ourselves our own place in colonisation\, before talking about (re)conciliation\, and feels privileged to engage in this conversation with Uncle Glenn.

SUMMARY:Road to the Referendum
DESCRIPTION:The Raising Peace Festival for 2023 is launching with an event that updates us on Australia’s most significant peace event for 2023 – the referendum on the Voice to Parliament. \nJust before the final weeks of the campaign we will hear from Yes23\, the official Voice campaign\, on what we can all do to ensure the success of the referendum. This session will feature an Acknowledgement of Country from Uncle Shane Charles\, speakers Thomas Mayo\, Danny Gilbert from Gilbert + Tobin and Jade Ritchie from the Yes23 campaign and plenty of opportunities for you to ask questions. \nJade Ritchie – Yes23 Campaign Spokesperson \nJade is from the Bunda Clan of the Gooreng Gooreng Nation and grew up on her Grandmother’s country in Bundaberg\, QLD. Jade has extended that advocacy to be a spokesperson for the Yes Campaign in the lead up to Referendum 2023. Jade continues to passionately advocate for social justice and for the First Peoples of Australia to be recognised in the Constitution by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament. \n  \n  \nA second event during the festival will take a step back and look at the Statement from the Heart\, signed at Uluru\, in its entirety\, and consider what it means for all of us as a step in restorative justice for Australia. \nThe ‘Yes’ image used here is the copyright of the Northern Land Council (https://www.nlc.org.au/the-voice).
