Darlene is a Wiradjuri woman from Dubbo. \nMiguel Heatwole and Sophie Moore are from the trio\, Song Brother. They’ll be singing thought-provoking songs with searing harmonies. Miguel is the director of environmental choir\, Ecopella\, recording engineer and composer. Sophie is a member of two of Miguel’s groups\, Song Brother\, Andsome Friends. She also sings with The Fossickers. \nOur MC\, Colin Hesse\, former Australian Greens Councillor on the Inner West Council\, was heavily involved in the local community for nearly 40 years\, campaigning for many progressive reforms. Colin is a volunteer presenter on Radio Skid Row 88.9FM\, is an active supporter of live music\, and a member of the Marrickville Peace Group. His strong interest in music and social justice makes him an ideal MC for this concert. \nThe concert is a fundraiser for the Raising Peace Festival occurring 14-22 September with mostly online workshops and panel discussions on a variety of topics. A highlight will be the conference “No War 2024”: Resisting the USA’s Military Empire held in collaboration with World Beyond War being held on the International UN Day of Peace on 21 September. This hybrid event is part of a global chain of four 4-hour sequential events\, broadcast from different countries that have USA bases\, Sydney being the first in the series. Peaceful relationships and peaceful communities are central in all faith traditions and these voices are important to hear to inspire us to work for peace. SUMMARY:Minors & Missiles
DESCRIPTION:In 2022 Medical Association for Prevention of War (MAPW) released a comprehensive report about the growing intrusion of multinational weapons companies into primary and secondary STEM education. Weapons companies seek to create positive brand association in minors and their families\, to promote and normalise careers in the development of lethal technology\, and generate social license for the trillion-dollar global trade in arms through their association with STEM education programs. \nIntrusion into children’s education is the beginning of a comprehensive pipeline that continues into the tertiary education sector\, where weapons companies are involved in bursaries\, research\, scholarships\, laboratories and more. \nThis session will illustrate the issue of harmful influence in education\, and show how we have successfully pushed back. By changing policies\, advocating to STEM programs\, promoting positive examples\, forging alliances\, and withdrawing social licence\, we can continue to make a difference. \nElise West from MAPW will present.

SUMMARY:Unpacking the Statement from the Heart
DESCRIPTION:‘Voice\, Treaty\, Truth’ is only the start. Wiradjuri priest\, writer and artist Glenn Loughrey has looked deeply at the Uluru Statement from the Heart and finds in it powerful potential for restorative justice in Australia – and more. In this session he will be in conversation with Emma Yates\, a lawyer and mediator with a keen interest in restorative principles and practice. \nGlen Loughrey \nGlenn is a Wiradjuri man. He is a leader at the Crawford School of Public Policy at the Australian National University in Canberra and the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne’s Educator and Advocate for the Voice. He is the chairperson of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Anglican Council\, the vicar of St Oswald’s in Glen Iris and artist in residence at St Paul’s Anglican Cathedral in Melbourne. Glenn is  the author of three books and is the author of Unpacking the Statement from the Heart A Personal Perspective from a Wiradjuri Man\, a paper written under the banner of the Crawford School of Public Policy. The views expressed in this perspective belong to Glenn alone are the fruit of deep reflection. It is vital that we listen and appreciate the different perspectives of First Nations people\, and understand the question confronting us as Australians. \nEmma Yates \nEmma Yates is a non-Indigenous Australian\, a mediator with a keen interest in restorative justice\, a recent Master of Peace and Conflict Studies graduate\, and passionate about relational peacebuilding. Emma first heard from Uncle Glenn Loughrey during the Initiatives of Change ‘Turruk’ program in 2021. She was deeply challenged by his call to non-Indigenous Australians to first acknowledge and reconcile inside ourselves our own place in colonisation\, before talking about (re)conciliation\, and feels privileged to engage in this conversation with Uncle Glenn.

SUMMARY:Road to the Referendum
DESCRIPTION:The Raising Peace Festival for 2023 is launching with an event that updates us on Australia’s most significant peace event for 2023 – the referendum on the Voice to Parliament. \nJust before the final weeks of the campaign we will hear from Yes23\, the official Voice campaign\, on what we can all do to ensure the success of the referendum. This session will feature an Acknowledgement of Country from Uncle Shane Charles\, speakers Thomas Mayo\, Danny Gilbert from Gilbert + Tobin and Jade Ritchie from the Yes23 campaign and plenty of opportunities for you to ask questions. \nJade Ritchie – Yes23 Campaign Spokesperson \nJade is from the Bunda Clan of the Gooreng Gooreng Nation and grew up on her Grandmother’s country in Bundaberg\, QLD. She’s lived on Larrakia Country for the past 10 years and is an advocate for the Uluru Statement from the Heart. Jade has extended that advocacy to be a spokesperson for the Yes Campaign in the lead up to Referendum 2023. Jade continues to passionately advocate for social justice and for the First Peoples of Australia to be recognised in the Constitution by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament. \n  \n  \nA second event during the festival will take a step back and look at the Statement from the Heart\, signed at Uluru\, in its entirety\, and consider what it means for all of us as a step in restorative justice for Australia. \nThe ‘Yes’ image used here is the copyright of the Northern Land Council (https://www.nlc.org.au/the-voice).

This is the third year this National Day has been convened\, and the theme is Compassion and Deep Wisdom.  \nThe Day will start with a launch that includes Marilyn Turkovich\, CEO of the global Charter for Compassion; Australian Ambassador\, Hugh MacKay on the Deep Wisdom of Community; Tania Rossi\, the great grand-daughter of Aunty Marg Tucker who in 1932 establish one of the country’s first Aboriginal organisations\, the Victorian Aborigines League – Tania will reflect on Indigenous wisdom. These sessions feature foremost international and Australian thinkers reflecting on a wide array of aspects of deep wisdom including as it applies to compassionate social infrastructure in our cities; to the strategic work of corporate boards; to the Indigenous insight into interdependence; to the Buddhist path to wisdom; to how it’s expressed across all age groups; in spiritual leadership in times of crisis; on how wisdom can guide political decision-making; in peaceful transformational change in society; and in creative and futurist thinking in the vital area of education. You can join these free online sessions to discuss the presentations (some live & some recorded) and contribute your own reflections on these thought-provoking issues. \nTake a day to pause and join the Australian Compassion Council in Deep Dreaming Australia A Continent for Compassion – commencing with our online launch at 8.00am (AEST)\, our sessions throughout the day and the final session at 6pm to ‘drop-in’ and reflect on what you will take away from the 2023 National Day of Compassion. \n Register for the launch event session 8am to 9am: https://old.charterforcompassion.org/index.php?option=com_civicrm&task=civicrm/event/info&reset=1&id=319 \nRegister for the National Day Sessions – 9am – 6.30pm     https://old.charterforcompassion.org/index.php?option=com_civicrm&task=civicrm/event/info&reset=1&id=309 \nMore information – Dr Lynne Reeder\, National Lead Australian Compassion Council Ph) 03 5327 6943

SUMMARY:Can war be avoided or will our peace be shattered
DESCRIPTION:As 2023 begins\, there has been a lot of drum-beating recently about the supposed inevitability of a war with China. But this is not the only perspective on the present situation! Raising Peace members the Marrickville Peace Group and Independent and Peaceful Australia Network are hosting an event at Marrickville Town Hall (and on live stream) this Sunday: Can war be avoided or will our peace be shattered? \nHosted by Mary Kostakidis\, the forum will feature a diverse and distinguished panel: Prof Bob Carr\, Senator David Shoebridge\, Dr Alison Broinowski and from the US\, Col. Lawrence Wilkerson. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSunday 19 March\, 4.30 PM\,Marrickville Town Hall \nCome in person or watch online at the Marrickville Peace Group’s Facebook page. Raising Peace will also share a recording of the event on our website. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe meet on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq. In 2003\, before the War in Iraq began\, millions of people marched in protest. Despite this\, the invasion went ahead\, because of lies told by the two chief war protagonists: the USA and the UK. Those lies destroyed trust in political leadership and redefine the meaning of citizen responsibility.  \nLies succeeded in dragging us into the Iraq invasion. Is that pattern being repeated? Are we being led into a new war (against China) by new lies?  \nSince 2003\, a continual process of military expansion\, preparing the nation for war\, has taken place. Respected defence strategist\, Hugh White\, has suggested that Australia is sleepwalking into a war with China.  \nAs citizens\, we\, the people\, need to wake up and act! Political leadership must be challenged. It is our responsibility is to ensure that war is avoided.  \nWar creates terrible suffering\, the loss of countless lives\, the waste of untold resources. International co-operation\, so urgently needed in the face of the climate crisis\, becomes impossible. The costs of war are far too high\, while the benefits of PEACE are immeasurable.  \nIt is up to us to steer the nation in the direction of peace!  \nDuring March 2023 three reports to parliament\, of vital concern\, will be released:  \n\nThe Defence Strategic Review\, \nThe Report on War Powers Reform\, and \nThe Report of the Submarine Task Force and AUKUS agreement (due 18 months after September\, 2021). \n\nWe have a collective responsibility\, a duty\, even\, to counter the lies. We must get Australia off the path that leads to war. This is a job for every body!

SUMMARY:United Nations Day of Peace Australia. 2022 Theme: End racism. Build peace
DESCRIPTION:Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world in September.\nThe UN General Assembly has declared this as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace\, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.\nBut achieving true peace entails much more than laying down arms.  It requires the building of societies where all members feel that they can flourish. It involves creating a world in which people are treated equally\, regardless of their race.\nAs UN Secretary-General António Guterres has said: “Racism continues to poison institutions\, social structures\, and everyday life in every society. It continues to be a driver of persistent inequality. And it continues to deny people their fundamental human rights. It destabilizes societies\, undermines democracies\, erodes the legitimacy of governments\, and … the linkages between racism and gender inequality are unmistakable.” \n \nWe invite you to join the efforts of the United Nations as we work towards a world free of racism and racial discrimination; a world where compassion and empathy overcome suspicion and hatred – a world that we can truly be proud of.\nOnline – 24 September 1:15 to 3:35 pm\nRegister Here\nUN Day of Peace 24 September 2022 – Full Program

SUMMARY:Bringing Peace to Ourselves and the World
DESCRIPTION:Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. The day is devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire. Achieving true peace entails much more than laying down arms. We all have a role to play in fostering peace. \nIn the face of yet another major war between countries\, the Global Peace Index continues to slip lower. Rigpa Australia invites you to join us to participate and contribute to this year’s International Day of Peace: exploring and reflecting on how we as individuals can help\, or deal with our feelings of helplessness. \nMoving from the global to the individual\, we can look at what the Buddha taught to help us to bring peace to ourselves and to others.  It is said that for a peaceful world we need a world of peaceful people.  Every one of us can bring more peace to ourselves and consequently contribute to a more peaceful world. Rigpa’s teachers will guide us in reflection\, meditation and compassion practices that you can take with you into your daily life. \nJoin us to understand more about peace\, both global and personal\, at Rigpa’s centre in Newtown. We will hear from the Institute for Economics and Peace\, delving into the Global Peace Index and what it tells us\, and importantly learning about the Pillars of Peace\, those attributes that are consistently shown to be the bases of peaceful communities\, large and small. \nThe 2022 theme for the International Day of Peace is “End racism. Build peace.” The United Nations are working towards a world free of racism and racial discrimination. A world where compassion and empathy overcome suspicion and hatred. In this light\, we have chosen to give the funds donated during the evening to the Uluru Statement from the Heart\, winner of the Sydney Peace Prize 2022. \nThis is an in person event being held at Temple on the Park\, Rigpa in Newtown.
